Water softeners use an ion-exchange process to extract hard minerals such as calcium from water. Though seemingly simple in concept, the benefits of removing the hardness from water are many. Among other things soft water removes spotting on dishes, reduces the amount of detergent used in laundry and is critical for espresso machines and steamers.
